'Breaking Ground' celebrates the work of innovative women artists, past and present, whose art is represented in the Whitehorse Art Collection. Women artists have long made significant, yet often under-recognised contributions to Australia’s cultural life. From pioneering painters of the early twentieth century such as Norah Gurdon and Clara Southern, who defied societal norms to paint alongside their male counterparts en plein air, to the trailblazing modernist abstractions of Yvonne Audette and Inge King – these artists paved the way for future generations.
In addition to key historic works, the exhibition features contemporary practitioners whose diverse approaches reflect the vibrancy and breadth of women’s artistic practice today.
Opening celebration Saturday 31 January 1pm to 3pm.
